Like many people in Maine, we were unaccustomed to defending ourselves from allegations of wrongdoing by others. Faced with the threat of civil action, we relied on Mr. Smith for advice. Our meeting with him provided comfort and direction. Whenever we had questions, he was rapidly responsive. Most importantly, his guidance led to an acceptable conclusion that avoided court or overly extended uncertainty. We highly recommend him for his assistance in civil disputes.

Client of Steve Smith

I am incredibly pleased I hired Steve Smith and Jack Baldacci to help with an unscrupulous builder. They went above and beyond to make sure A) the contractor finished the job they were paid to do and B) to prevent them from doing the same thing to anyone in the future. I highly recommend them.

Scott

I’ve hired Steve for two cases and I am very pleased with my decision. He fights for his clients and strives for the best outcome. His entire staff is pleasant and wonderful to work with.

Amber

I hired Steve for a parental rights case involving my 2 children. He was aggressive but supportive and did not file unnecessary motions that wasted my retainer. I was terrified of court but with his experience, I felt at ease. The process was explained and his staff was great as well. I would hire him again if needed and received a great outcome with an order that works for me and my children.

Handled my Parental Rights Case with Ease

I wish I had retained him sooner, his help has been immeasurable.

Stephen “Steve” C.Smith

Stephen “Steve” Smith, Esq.

Steve’s non-legal background includes a military career in the U.S. Army. After beginning as an infantryman in the 3rd Ranger Battalion he served as a machine gunner in Desert Storm. After leaving active service, he joined the Maine Army National Guard where he served as a sniper team leader in the Mountain Infantry. Following his infantry service as an NCO, Steve became one of the first direct commissioned officers in the Guard, beginning his career as an officer as an engineer platoon leader.

Shortly after graduating law school, he was direct commissioned as a Judge Advocate General officer. Following the attacks of 9/11, Steve was asked to serve in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan as a military prosecutor. Steve’s deployment lasted 18 months and upon his return, he saw his 3rd child for the first time. Steve retired from the army after 21 years of service. His legal expertise and long association with the military have made him an expert resource for other attorneys in issues pertaining to military divorces and pensions.

Steve has played a significant role in the revitalization of downtown Bangor; he started the New Year’s Ball Drop in the downtown area, rehabilitated three historical commercial buildings in a once-blighted area, and developed two successful restaurants. He runs a diversified family farm with his wife, three sons, and daughter.

Various Victories

  • Steve Smith was recently elected to the Town of Whitefield’s representative to the RSU #12 School Board.
  • After a 3-day trial, Steve won a significant victory in Androscoggin County. Steve’s client was charged with 10 counts of gross sexual assault against a minor under 12. Before trial began, the State dismissed four of the counts. After testimony, the jury was out over the span of two days and ultimately hung. While the State has the option of retrying the case, it appears the jury was evenly split in facts which surprised the State. Steve’s cross-examination brought out facts which significantly undercut the State’s case.
  • Because of his expertise in sex crime defense and statewide practice, Steve Smith was asked to defend “F.S.”, who was accused of gross sexual assault. Steve struck a favorable plea bargain which allowed the Defendant to be released within a few months.
  • A Defendant was charged with 40 counts of sexual assault against two minors which took place over 30 years ago. After over a year of litigation, Steve was able to obtain a result in which the client served no jail time and was able to return to his home state subject only to probation.
